Blog Tour | The Girl and the Gargoyle by Pauline Gruber

The Girl and the Gargoyle (The Girl and the Raven #2)
Release Date: 06/23/15

Dating a gargoyle is great, until his family gets involved.

Summary from Goodreads:

Being half-witch/half-demon and dating Marcus, a gargoyle and demon enemy, is complicated enough for Lucy. She can almost tolerate Jude, her demon father, forcing her to undergo combat training.

But when Marcus’s long-lost family returns to Chicago, her world begins to crumble. Marcus's mother wants him to leave to join the gargoyle clan; his father wants him to help kill Jude. There’s one major problem with this: if Jude dies, Lucy dies.

Marcus will do whatever it takes to save Lucy and her father. Meanwhile Lucy has her own plan and with the aid of a surprise newcomer, seeks help from the most unlikely—and dangerous—source.

Excerpt:

“What are you?” The words come out like a sigh.

He takes his time answering, but when he finally speaks, the velvety softness of his voice turns husky, sending a delicious shiver through me. “I’m the creature who spends his nights on the rooftop, protecting you from evil.”

Author Interview With Dylan Douglas

Dylan and I meet in the weight room at St. Aquinas College Prep. The other players have left and he lets me in the back door.

Me: How have you been, Dylan?

Dylan: [Flashing his mega watt smile.] I was voted MVP this year. I’m officially a football star. Not bad, huh?

His smile fades as he lies down on a weight bench and knocks out a dozen presses. The number of plates on the bar amazes me. Is this why he lifts after the other players have gone?

But if you’re referring to the other stuff, I don’t know. What am I? Human? Demon? Freak? My moods…I get mad over stupid stuff these days.

Sitting on the edge of the bench, he looks around then turns back to me.

If people found out…I’d be kicked off the team. I’d lose my status at school. And if my little brother and sister found out, they’d be afraid of me. That would kill me.

Me: Tell me about the mood swings. Are you in control?

Dylan: [He laughs bitterly.] Control? Today, I’m fine, but there are days where I’m barely hanging on. If someone provokes me on the field, it takes everything I’ve got to keep a lid on it. And when I’m playing, I’m restraining myself. I could crush everyone out there.

He takes a couple of deep breaths.

Lucy’s keeping an eye on me. Funny, right? She’s a puny girl and she’s watching out for me.

Me: That puny girl is part-witch / part-demon. She’s pretty tough.

Dylan: Yeah, I get that, but still. I’m the big jock. I’m supposed to be the one to save the day. Lucy’s going through a lot. I should be the one watching out for her. Not the other way around.

Me: This past year was pretty tough. Demons versus gargoyles and all that.

Dylan: I’m still alive. Lucy, too, although Marcus barely survived.

He stares off at nothing; absently rubbing his jaw then returns his attention to me.

I…I don’t like to think about what happened that day.

Me: [Changing the subject.] You have more stubble than other high school boys.

Dylan: [He rubs his jaw again.] A side effect of being a demon. Women twice my age hit on me now. It was kind of cool at first, but now? I’d rather be normal.

Me: Lucy seems to be adjusting to her new identity. I’m not comparing, so please don’t take it that way. Why—?

Dylan: Why don’t I just roll with it, be a nice little demon? [He narrows his eyes at me.] Maybe because my dad lied to me my entire life. Maybe because I discovered he made a deal with the devil, putting a price on my head. And I witnessed Lucy getting attacked again during the recent battle. No. I’m not dealing with any of this very well.

A door slams off in the distance. Dylan looks over his shoulder.

Dylan: Coach must be back.

Me: I should go.

Dylan escorts me to the exit.

Dylan: Hey, sorry for going off on you. It’s the temper thing again.

Me: Return to demon training, Dylan. Lucy needs her partner back.

Dylan: My head’s been in a weird place since the big battle. I just need a little more time.

Dylan shuts the door effectively cutting me off before I can say anything else.
