No One Dies in the Garden of Syn
Genre: YA Fantasy
Release Date: April 26th 2016

Synthia (Syn) Wade is a teenage girl who struggles with cystic fibrosis, an incurable life-threatening disease. One day she is pushed into a pond by an unseen figure and wakes up in a new world – a mysterious garden where illness and death don’t exist.

Welcomed by the garden’s residents and now free of her symptoms, Syn decides to stay. But, before long, she realizes that this apparent utopia holds many dangers and dark secrets.

Surrounding the garden is a fog that Syn is warned never to enter. She encounters bizarre creatures that defy reason. And always lurking in the shadows is a masked woman - a woman who may have a connection to the disappearance of Syn’s parents many years ago. A woman whom no one will speak of, but whom everyone fears.

While No One Dies in the Garden of Syn, Syn will soon discover that some fates are worse than death.

“Honey,” Synthia heard her mom say, “You need to wake up.”
“Is it morning?” she asked, yawning and squinting on account of the bright ceiling light.
“No, Sweetie. Not yet.”
Synthia’s nose was dripping. Her mom wiped it and her upper lip with a tissue. “Your dad and I are going to take you somewhere. Some place wonderful. But we have to leave really soon so you need to get out of bed right away.”
“Can’t we wait until morning?”
“I’m afraid not, Sweetie. We have to get you dressed and leave tonight. You will love where we are going. I promise.”
Synthia reluctantly sat up and allowed her pajama top to be pulled off. The bottom of the undershirt had just been lifted when Synthia’s father walked in.
“Deb, Masie is outside.”
Her mother’s face turned white. She pressed her palms against each side of Synthia’s face. “Sweetie, we’ll be back in a few minutes. Please get dressed.”
After they left the room, Synthia listened to them thumping down the stairs, opening the front door and slamming it shut.
She was tired, not to mention bewildered, and didn’t want to go anywhere. She lay down, coughed lightly, and fell back asleep in less than a minute, despite the gleaming ceiling light above. If she had stayed awake for just one minute longer, she would have heard yelling outside, and seen a bright white light flashing through the window.
When Synthia woke, there was enough sun shining in, even with the blinds shut, that she didn’t notice the ceiling light was still on. She rubbed her eyes, wiped her runny nose with a tissue, and coughed until her throat was clear. She took a sip of water from the cup on her night table and checked the time; 9:32 a.m. She was late for kindergarten. Her mom usually awakened her at 7:30. Was that a dream, when her mom shook her awake last night? If not, why didn’t she come back?
Synthia coughed a few more times, put on some slippers and left the room. Her parents’ bedroom was empty. So were all the bathrooms and the bedrooms. The living room was empty, as were the dining room and kitchen. She tried to turn the knob on the basement door, but it was locked as always. She looked through the kitchen window into the gardens out back and didn’t see so much as a bird.
Synthia was more confused than worried. In the kitchen, she took her morning pills with a vanilla shake. The back door was slightly ajar, so she pulled the doorknob and stepped outside, curious.
A light wind ruffled her undershirt and pajama bottoms. A robin landed on a tree in the garden as a breeze rustled its leaves. There was no sign of her parents. Holding the handrail, she descended the stairs and peeked inside the carport. Both her parents’ cars were parked there. Now Synthia was no longer just confused. She was worried.
The basement window on the right side of the carport had always been covered by blinds, so she couldn’t see in. She knocked on the glass, hoping her parents were down there as they often were. Quiet taps at first, then harder and louder. Nothing. A tear rolled down her cheek, followed by another.
Now Synthia was more than worried; she was scared. She left the carport and went to the front of the house. The mailman was walking up the driveway.
Concerned to see this little girl, partially clothed and crying in the driveway, he bent down to her level. “Are you okay? Where are your parents?”

Synthia broke down, tears flooding from her eyes. Through the phlegm building up in her throat, she managed a quiet, yet desperate reply. “I don’t know.”

About the Author

My name is Michael Seidelman.  I was born in Vancouver, BC Canada where I continue to reside. When I was growing up, my passions were reading, watching movies, nature and creative writing. Not much has changed since then. In high school when I had an opportunity to write short stories in class, I relished reading them out loud to my classmates who would gasp at the unexpected twists and applaud when I was done. I took several creative writing classes and have continued writing over the years while working in Interactive Marketing.

About two years ago, I decided to take some time off to focus on my writing and work on a Young Adult trilogy. The first book in The Garden of Syn series – No One Dies in the Garden of Syn – will be released on April 26th. Meanwhile, I am working hard on the second and third books in the series.
Getting up every morning and sitting down to create new characters and bring new worlds to life is the most fulfilling job I have ever had. Beyond the trilogy, I have many ideas plotted out and I look forward to sharing them all with the world!

Summary from Goodreads:

Prague, 1610

Ludmila Novakova--Mila--has barely set foot outside Prague Castle in her seventeen years. But with the choice between braving the bandits and wolves of Bohemia's uneasy roads or being married off to a disgusting old baron, she's taken what she can carry and fled.

But Mila can't sit behind a stone wall and let fear force her into a life of silk gowns and certain misery. Her mother's death has taught her that much. She has one ally: Marc, the son of the blacksmith. A commoner, a Protestant--and perhaps a traitor, too. But the farther she gets from the castle, the more lies she uncovers, unraveling everything she thought she knew. And the harder it is to tell friend from enemy--and wrong from right . . .

The beauty of Prague Castle—my home—filled me with an overwhelming sense of panic.  I shivered, partly from fear of returning to the castle and partly because my thin cloak didn’t provide enough warmth from the night’s chill.
                “You’re cold,” Marc said.
                “I’m fine.”
He slipped his hand under my cloak and rubbed my bare arm.  “You’re not fine. You’re freezing.”
“We’re almost there.  I won’t freeze.”
Marc drew me to him until my back lay against his chest.  I shivered again with the unexpected contact.  He wrapped his arms around my waist and leaned into me, using his large frame to shield my body from the whipping wind.  I couldn’t stop myself—I nestled into him, seeking his warmth.
“That’s better,” he whispered.

I was incredibly aware of how close we were and how much of our bodies touched.  I’d never been this close to a man.  My mind buzzed with activity.  Was he as aware of me as I was of him?  Or was I being silly?

Blog Tour | Temple of Paris by Laura DeBruce

The Temple of Paris (The Quick Silver Legacy Series #2)
Release Date: February 5th 2016

Summary from Goodreads:

An adventure through Paris

American teenagers, Hana and Alex, travel to Paris on a mission to save the people they love. They have to decode an obscure message to find the only woman on earth who can help them. They soon discover unexpected allies — a quirky detective with a crystal dowser, and two young Italians studying in the City of Light. When a mysterious dwarf stalks Alex, and sinister characters from the past reappear, Hana questions the truth about their newfound friends.

The first lives Hana and Alex need to save may be their own.

Book Trailer for The Riddle of Paris:

One of the intriguing new characters in The Temple of Paris is a dwarf who seems to be following Alex all over Paris. In the scene below, Hana and Alex spot the little man in the Madeleine Church.

Excerpt from The Temple of Paris
Chapter Twenty-Three

I squeeze Alex’s hand and point. It’s the little man from the Pantheon. The dwarf. I recognize the thick, dark hair flopped over to the side. He’s exchanged the suit and bow tie for jeans and a turtleneck.
Alex tugs me down into a chair. “That’s the guy who’s been following me!” We crouch behind a large family filling the row in front of us.
“Who is he?” I ask. “He’s definitely looking for someone.”
            “Yeah,” Alex notes grimly. “Me.”
“But why? And how would he know you’d be here?”
Alex . . . puts his hands on his thighs. “I’m going to find out.” He starts to stand.
“No.” I pull him back down. “He could be dangerous.”
Alex keeps the dwarf in his line of sight. “Nah. I have this feeling he’s kind of looking out for me, you know?”
“I don’t know,” I reply. “And neither do you. All we know for sure is that he’s creeping around after you. We can’t just go over to meet him.”
“Not we.” Alex pats my hand. “I’m going to talk to him.”
“That’s a bad idea, Alex.” I can tell from the determined look on his face that he’s not listening.
“What’s he gonna do in the middle of a crowded church full of tourists? I’m just going to find out why he’s been following me.”
“And what am I supposed to do?” I really don’t like this plan.
“You stay right here.” He nods toward an elderly lady sitting a few chairs away from us. “Granny over there will look after you.”
            “You’re not funny, Alex.”
He gives me a hug and stands up. “I’ll be right back.” I watch him weave through the rows of chairs. As Alex nears the podium, the man sees him. A look of surprise, bordering on panic, crosses his face. Alex climbs the steps until he’s right next to the dwarf. He bends down to hear something the little man says. They walk down the steps. I stand to see where they’re going. Alex turns and motions to me. “Stay there,” he mouths, giving a thumbs-up.
I feel helpless as Alex and the little man disappear behind the columns near the altar. How long am I supposed to wait? What if Hank Riggins is back there, poised to kidnap Alex? I take a deep breath and try to calm down. Someone taps me on the shoulder. When I turn around, I am staring into the face of a ghost.

Introducing… Jepp.

One of the new characters in The Temple of Paris is a dwarf named Jepp who served as a jester to the astronomer, Tycho Brahe, in the late 1500s. The painting below is of another dwarf jester who was at the court of Philip IV of Spain, Sebastian de Morra, but this is how I imagine Jepp looked.

Neither the dwarf below nor Jepp were treated very well, as the look on the man’s face below seems to indicate.

Here’s a conversation between Jepp and Alex from The Temple of Paris in the Café Car on a train. It’s based, in part, on a legendary story about Tycho Brahe and a beer-drinking elk:

“Tycho Brahe was my master, and I, his loyal servant.” Jepp looks through the window at the shadowy landscape rushing by. “If I look back with today’s sensibilities,” he continues, “I see a somewhat abusive relationship.” His lips curve into the slightest of smiles. “Ah, but when I put myself in the shoes I used to wear, I laugh at the hijinks and shenanigans. Tycho was not only a brilliant astronomer. He had a tremendous sense of humor.” Jepp’s face darkens slightly. “True, I was often the butt of the joke, but, I do not think I minded.”
“What do you mean by shenanigans?” Alex asks, gathering up another handful of the French fries on his tray.
“Suffice to say they entailed much drinking of alcohol and tomfoolery with household pets.” Jepp takes a long sip of his bubbly water.
“Pets?” Alex raises an eyebrow. “Like the wolfhound under the table?” He chews the fries.
“Tycho’s favorites were the elks,” Jepp says.
“Oh.” Alex’s eyes brighten. “The elks were household pets? As in deer with large horns?”

“There was one with particularly large horns.” Jepp suppresses a chuckle

Being popular is a lot harder than it looks.

To make things even more complicated, along comes Nick Jenkins…

Is this really what it’s like to live…

Next Door To A Star?

Book Trailer:

Excerpt:
The school year should end right after spring break, because all anyone can focus on is summer vacation. You can’t learn anything new, because all you can think about is all the fun stuff you’re going to do once you don’t have to get up at the butt crack of dawn. Summer always seems full of possibilities.
Nothing exciting ever happens during the school year, but maybe, during summer vacation, you could run into a hot celebrity and he’d decide to put you in his next music video. Okay, it wasn’t like I knew anybody that happened to, but my grandparents did live next door to a former TV star, Simone Hendrickson, and Simone was discovered in an ice cream parlor one summer. Of course, she lived in L.A. at the time and was already doing plays and commercials, so the guy who discovered her had already seen her perform. But hey, it was summer, she got discovered, and that was all that mattered.

Amazing stuff didn’t happen to me. You know what happened to me last summer? I stepped on a bee and had to go to the emergency room. They’re not going to make an E! True Hollywood Story out of my life. I didn’t go on exotic vacations—like today, I was being dragged along with my parents to my cousin’s graduation party. Most people waited until at least the end of May before having a grad party, but Charisma was having hers early because she was leaving on a trip to Spain. I was dreading this party because I didn’t want to listen to everybody talk about how smart and talented Charisma was—making me feel like a blob in comparison—but my mom RSVP’d even though I said I’d rather die than go. My death threats meant nothing. But still, for some strange reason, I had a feeling this summer was going to be different.

Sequel out in March! Competition with the Star. (Star Series: Book 2)

Book Tour | Shanti & the Magic Mandala by F.T. Camargo

Shanti and the Magic Mandala
by F.T. Camargo

Shanti and the Magic Mandala is an adventure in which fantasy and reality are mingled. The book tells the story of six teenagers, from different religious and cultural origins and different parts of the world, who are mystically recruited to form two groups - one in the Northern Hemisphere, and one in the Southern. They eventually gather in Peru, and through a single alliance, begin a frantic chase for the sacred object that can stop the black magician's final plan.

Excerpt:

Shanti was the first to smell the smoke. She paused in her frantic packing. “Do you smell something burning?”

“Yes, I do,” Lelê said, worried.
It was getting noticeably hotter in the room. “Look, there’s smoke coming in under the door!” Antônio cried. Black smoke was slowly seeping beneath the door and into the room. Lelê ran to the window.
“The door won’t open,” Shanti said, struggling with the lock.
“Neither will the window.” Lelê was close to tears.
“Let me try, Shanti.” Antônio grasped the doorknob, applying his strength to it. Even as he fought with the lock, the smoke and the heat were rising.”
“They did it. We're stuck in here,” Helena said, coughing.
Antônio hammered on the wall. “Nasir! Itai! Tadao! Help us!”
“They want to kill us,” Lelê cried, shaking with fear.
Looking intently at Helena, her voice ringing with determination, Shanti declared, “But we’re not going to let them succeed!”
“Get away from the door,” Antônio said, kicking at it.
Hearing Antônio's call for help, Nasir and Itai had rushed to the door, only to find it locked. Tadao tried the window. “It won’t open,” he said, fearful. “The window's locked.”
“We can’t get out. What’s happening?” Nasir said, with an edge of panic.
“It’s black magic,” Itai said, trying to help Nasir break down the door.
Just then, an image of the book came into his mind. He ran over to his backpack, still on top of his bed and upended it shaking everything out.
Suddenly there was a loud noise, like an explosion — the door swung open. Flames and gouts of heavy, black smoke poured into the room. The whole hallway was on fire.
Tadao pushed at the window again, but it defied his efforts to open it.
Itai reached for his book. It was illuminated once again. He stood up and held the book with both hands, opening it. A bright light shone forth from the page it had opened on and he saw another name, formed with three Hebrew letters. Seitel, another of the 72 names of God. Itai knew that the Angel Seitel was able to create a protective shield. He closed his eyes, forming an urgent prayer, reaching out to connect with the angel, shutting out the mayhem around him for a few moments. Opening his eyes he gazed at the three letters from right to left for a few more precious seconds. Then he closed the book, replaced everything else in the backpack and hoisted it on his back. He picked up the book, holding it in his right hand. “Grab your backpacks and follow me.”
Nasir stared at him with an expression that clearly showed concern for his sanity “Itai?”
“Follow me,” Itai repeated with certainty.
“What? What do you mean?” Tadao almost shouted.
Nasir took his backpack and positioned himself behind Itai. “May Allah protect us!”
Watching Nasir, Tadao did the same. Itai took the closed book in both hands, pointing it towards the fire, as they approached the door. The book emitted an increasingly intense light. Gradually, a large shield began to form, surrounding the three boys.
“Wow! It's a light vehicle, a merkaba!” Nasir said, reverently, his gaze locked on the intense white light of the forming shield.
“Incredible!” Tadao said, forming his own silent prayer, Thank you, Lord Buddha.
Steadfastly Itai moved towards the door now engulfed by large flames. He advanced out of the room, into the hallway, the light shield in front of him, and as he moved, he created a clear path, the shield pushing away the flames, heat and smoke. He stopped in front of Shanti’s bedroom door. The wood was charred and blackened and the ancient lock had popped free, leaving the door swinging brokenly. Their friends had crowded at the back of the room, near the window, trying to get away from the thick, choking smoke. “Grab your backpacks! Get behind Nasir and Tadao!” Itai shouted.
“We’re coming!” Antônio said, grabbing his backpack and walking swiftly towards the door.
Lord Ganesha, please open those paths, Shanti prayed, putting all of her faith into the prayer.
Within moments, the three were in place. The light shield began to grow sideways, eventually forming a large cube of light, protecting all of them. They crossed the hall, safe from the flames. As they went down the stairs, they heard the roof collapsing behind them. The reception area had been completely destroyed by fire, but again they passed through the devastation completely shielded from the heat and flames. They reached the door leading to the outside. Itai wasted no time in pulling it open and they poured out of the burning building.
As soon as the last one of them stepped onto the street, the old pension began to collapse, turning into a huge bonfire.
